The loss of youthful contours in the face and neck can be due to a variety of factors, including heredity, gravity, environmental conditions and stress. As a result, the skin in our neck area and jawline can appear loose and wrinkled. When the neck area doesn’t match the upper facial appearance, a neck lift may be a good solution.

A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the jawline and neck. Choosing a neck lift surgery can provide several benefits, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

What benefits can a neck lift give me?

As a restorative surgery, neck lift surgery can improve the appearance of your neck and jawline by treating some of the following:

  • Excess fat and skin relaxation in the lower face that creates jowls.
  • Excess fatty deposits under the chin.
  • Loose neck skin.
  • Muscle banding in the neck, which creates abnormal contours.
What can I expect during a neck lift?

While neck lifts are a common cosmetic procedure, each one is unique. The procedure is done under general anesthesia, or with a combination of local anesthesia and a mild sedative. A neck lift is typically not very painful, and patients return home the day of surgery with pain medication to manage any discomfort.

What can I expect during recovery?

After neck lift surgery, you will be given specific instructions that may include how to care for the surgical site and drains, as well as medications to apply or take orally to aid healing. During the recovery period it is important to keep your head elevated above your heart to minimize swelling and to keep your head straight (no excessive twisting or bending of the neck). As swelling and bruising subside, the visible improvements of a neck lift will appear.

Is a neck lift right for me?

To determine whether or not a neck lift is the right procedure for you, schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. During your visit, your doctor will speak with you about the goals you have for your appearance.

Before making recommendations, your plastic surgeon will also perform a face and neck exam to assess skin type, skin laxity and bone structure. Bring a list of medications, supplements and vitamins you take, and have a list prepared of the questions or concerns you may have. Being open with our specialists is key to a safe and successful neck lift.
